NCAA Tournament First Round

Our post season continued this weekend with the first round of NCAA Tournament. We were playing Illinois State who we had lost to 1-3 earlier in the season and we were very excited to avenge our loss. Also it was the first time in our team history that Milwaukee was hosting an NCAA game. When we found out who we were playing we were so excited that we wanted to play them right then and there. The week of practice leading up to the game was extremely intense with all of us extra focused because our main goal this season was to go far in the NCAA Tournament. By the time the game came around we were nervous but confident because we knew that we prepared well.

The game was a Friday night under the lights, aka the best place to be in Milwaukee on a Friday night! The crowd was great as always. The game started off with a furious pace, we put them under high pressure right away and we won a corner. Kiki hit a great corner and Apple went up and beat everyone to the ball and put us up 1-0. It was only three minutes into the game so we knew there was plenty of time left but we were very happy with our start. The rest of the half was back and forth so we went into half time up 1-0.

We knew that the first 10 minutes of the second half were critical because if Illinois State gets an early goal then they are back in the game. As predicted them came out hard in the second half and we had to weather a storm of corner kicks by them but we stayed strong together and were able to not give up a goal. Our defense played amazing, with Forbes coming up big in the second half. Then we got the ball down on the left side and Apple got the ball off a throw in which she took a quick shot that their goalie was able to deflect but Krissy was there to put in the rebound. There was about 15 minutes left in the game and while we were feeling really good about where we were in the game we knew that Illinois State wasn’t going to give up. Then in the 85th minute Morgan laid off a great ball and Kiki smashed home the exclamation point to our win. The game ended 3-0 and it was the first out right win of UWM women’s soccer team history in the NCAA tournament.

It was an AMAZING win with everyone playing great, our bench was awesome and the energy at Engelmann stadium was unmatched. An overall great weekend! We will play Ohio State in the second round but we are not sure where yet. (Editor's Note: Durham, N.C.)

Keep on supporting your Panthers and wish us luck in the second round of the NCAA Tournament!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Horizon League Champs!

Last week was the end of our regular season so this weekend was the start of our post-season play. This weekend was the Horizon league tournament and we were hosting. We were the #1 seed so we got a first round by and only had to play Friday and Sunday.

Our Friday game was against Butler and, while the score during the regular season was lopsided, they gave us a very tough game so we had to be ready. The game had a great atmosphere and we were ready to come out and prove that our undefeated regular season was not a fluke. Butler came out in a very defensive formation and so we had the ball in their half most of the game. They were trying to frustrate us but we kept our cool and close to the end of the first half Kelsey Holbert had a great move on the end line to beat her defender. Then she hit a low driven cross that I was able to put away for us to get a 1-0 lead. At halftime we talked about not getting frustrated and to just keep the ball moving. The second half I thought we did a great job of keeping our head and keeping the ball but we couldn’t get another goal. The game ended 1-0 and while we would have liked to have scored more goals we were happy with the win and advancing to the finals.

The finals were held on Sunday and we were playing a very feisty Wright State team. Wright State came out with a lot of energy and unlike Butler was trying to attack us. It worked because they got an early goal but our team has a lot of maturity and experience so we knew this it is a long game. Then Wright State made the mistake of leaving Apple out wide 1v1 and she megged her defender and crossed the ball to Laurel who made a great run into the box and slotted the ball near post to tie the game 1-1. Then right before half time Morgan, Kelly, and Apple were hustling in the box and the ball popped out wide and Kelly calmly put the ball away in the low corner. We were up 2-1 at halftime and extremely happy with our response to being down a goal. We were also feeling that we had to momentum and it was very important to not let it go. We came out and really took it to Wright State and our seniors really took over. Kiki scored our next goal off a sick run through the Wright State defense and then hit a rocket of a shot into the side netting. Then we were awarded a free kick and Kenzie hit a perfect ball into the box that Apple was able to put away. Then Apple put the exclamation point on our finals win with an upper 90 blast from the top of the box. The game ended 5-1 and we are HORIZON LEAGUE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS FOR THE 4TH YEAR IN A ROW!!!!!

This senior class is the first class to win the tournament all 4 years and it is just a testament to all that they have done for UWM women’s soccer…….in the words of Apple “can you say dynasty?” This was a great weekend and now we are all waiting eagerly to find out whom we play in the NCAA tournament.

GO PANTHERS!!!!!

Senior Night...

We had only one game this weekend, but it was a big one for us. It was our last regular season game, our Pink Out game and Senior Night. It was against Green Bay, who had to win this game to have a chance to make it to the Horizon League Tournament and they have an extremely tight defense. They haven’t scored many goals this year, but they haven’t given up many either. We also had a little extra motivation because all week at practice we had been talking about getting back on the winning track after our disappointing loss to Illinois State.

The pre-game announcements were emotional because it was celebrating our seniors, who have been the rock that holds this team together. This senior class will not only go down as arguably the best class that Milwaukee has ever had but also they are some of the greatest people I know. They have done so much to get Milwaukee soccer on the national map and all while doing it with such grace and appreciation. Each senior has also not only got it done on the field but each will do great things off the field in the future. I know that I can speak for all my teammates when I say thanks so much to the seniors and how much they have done for all of us!!!!!

Now on to the game, we came out strong and really pinned Green Bay into their half and about 10 minutes in Apple scored a great header off my corner kick. The half ended 1-0 and we went into the locker room happy but we wanted more goals. We came out hungry and sure enough scored 6 second half goals. I scored the second goal when my shot deflected off one of their defenders into the goal. Then Apple was taken down in the box and, as always, calmly put away the PK. Then she gave herself a hat trick when she had a nice turn in the box and put the ball in the back on a low driven shot. Then our freshman class showed that, while we are going to miss our seniors, we are going to be just fine next year. The 5th goal of the game was scored by Vienna, who also sang the national anthem for us, off a loose ball in the box. Then Morgy (Morgan LaPlant) had the next goal off a great move in the box and a perfectly placed ball to the far post. Finally Kelsey Holbert made it 7-0 when she lunged herself onto an awesome cross from Laurel. We were extremely happy with the win and how we were able to send our seniors out!

Except for the little bit of rain at the end, it was a wonderful atmosphere at Engelmann stadium. The pink out game was a success and we sent out seniors off the right way. We ended the season a perfect 8-0 in the horizon league and now we host the tournament next weekend, so COME OUT AND SUPPORT your Panthers this weekend back at Engelmann Stadium!!!!!!!!!!

Highs and lows...

I am writing this on our bus ride back from Illinois State and I must admit I am a little depressed (you will find out why later) so here goes my blog. We started out this week with crazy weather that eventually led to our game being cancelled against Loyola this Wednesday. It was moved to Thursday but I happened to have a math exam right when we were suppose to leave so Dave Madsen drove me down a little later with Sammy. A special thanks to Dave for driving me and to the UWM athletic department for arranging this for me! So we got down to Loyola and they have been having a hard year but as with every Horizon League game each team gives us their best game. We came out and scored 2 early goals. The first goal was a rocket of a shot by Kelsey Holbert off a great pass from Apple. Then Apple scored off a pk when a defender took her down in the box. Apple is great at taking pk's and calmly put away this one. Then Kiki tucked a great shot in the bottom corner off a long shot. We went into half time up 3-0 and felt good about where we sat but a little disappointed that we didn’t hold more of the possession. The second half saw no score change and so the game ended 3-0. We were happy with the win but overall not happy with our performance. We gave away too many easy balls and just couldn’t get a rhythm going. On a happier note with Detroit losing we clinched the out right league title and home field advantage to host the Horizon League Tournament!!!

Now on to the reason that I am depressed, we traveled down to Illinois State on Saturday. We knew that they were going to be good and really come out hard. We started the game sluggishly and they jumped on us and eventually got a goal that really woke us up. We knew they were here to play and that if we wanted to win we would have to step it up. We came right back down and with in 2 minutes Krissy got a pass from Kelsey and beat her defender one v one and smashed home a shot. We knew we were back in this, and the half ended 1-1. We came out and I thought dominated most of the possession in the second half but couldn’t crack the goal. Then kind of against the run of play they got a second goal off a cross into the box. Again we had chances but just couldn’t finish. Then they were awarded a pk off an extremely controversial call. They called a hand ball in the box but Mary’s hand was at her side so we felt that it should have been ruled unintentional and when they scored off the pk, we were down 1-3 and there was about 10 mins left which is a pretty dire situation to be in. We keep pushing but couldn’t get anything and with that the game ended with us losing 1-3 and hence a depressing bus ride back. We really just felt that we could have played better and while give credit to Illinois State they are very good team and played well, I feel that if we played our best we would have won. This is only our second loss of the season so it hurts but we are going to learn from it and come back stronger than ever.

Overall not a great week for your Panthers but we did clinch the home field advantage and the league title which is two of our goals for the season. We play Green Bay on Friday at home it is SENIOR NIGHT (I am already crying) and our Pink out game at 7 p.m. So come on out and support your Panthers!!!!!

Birthdays and Bulldogs...

This weekend we went to Butler. This was the weekend of the birthday.

We left on Friday morning and drove straight through to Butler. Then we practiced at Butler for an hour and then went back to the hotel. Emily Scott’s parents had planned a surprise birthday cake for her. So Mike told the defenders that they had to meet to get her away from the lobby but the meeting took a little long and so the candles burned almost into the cake. They were trick candles and so there was a lot of smoke and we set off the fire alarm. We thought the front desk called the fire department in time but soon enough we heard the sirens and a fire truck pulled into the parking lot of the hotel. The firefighters were extremely nice and took some cake to go after we got a picture with them. Then Saturday was my mom’s birthday so I was very glad that I got to spend the day with her!

Now on to the game, we know Butler always brings their best against us so we had to be ready. The first half was pretty even but we got an early 1-0 lead from Kelsey Holbert off a great hustle play from Laurel in the box. Also Natalie made two awesome saves to keep us the game!!! At halftime we just talked about how we really wanted to keep the ball and make them chase and to just dominate. That we did. Apple hit an insane free kick to give us a 2-0 lead and then a little while later she got another goal off a great pass from Krissy. Butler then got a late goal off a throw in but we stayed calm and soon Morgan scored her first even collegiate goal!!!!!! Off a great flick from Vienna for her first career assist! We ended up winning 4-1 and Natalie got her first career win!!! The game was scrappy but we were very happy with the win and that a lot of people got to play!

We are on the road again next weekend but keep on supporting your Milwaukee Panthers! :)

Long Home Week

This week felt very long because of games on Wednesday and then Sunday. On Wednesday we played Valpo at home under the lights. We were with out Apple, who was at U23 National Team camp, (congrats Apple!!!) but we were determined to still score lots of goals.

We came out in the first half and played them fairly even, though we weren’t as sharp as we would have liked. We went into halftime 0-0 knowing that we could play better. We came out in the second half and got an early goal. Keara had a great hustle play to beat their keeper to a rolling ball in the box, and then Kelsey Holbert got the rebound and put the ball in the open net. We really controlled the possession and pinned Valpo back in their defensive half. Then Kelly made a great move and was taken down right outside the box. Kiki took a free kick right outside the box and nailed it home in the upper 90. The game ended 2-0 and we were very happy with this result.

This Sunday we played Youngstown State at home and it was an awesome day for soccer, almost a little hot for my liking. We knew that if we played our game and moved the ball well that we would come away with the victory. We came out and immediately put Youngstown state under lots of pressure. We got a great goal from our seniors in the ninth minute. Apple played a great pass to Kiki who then played a great little ball to Laurel who toe poked it home. Then another great combination led to a goal. Kelsey Holbert played a great through ball to Kiki, who send a great cross to Krissy who headed the ball in the back of the net for her first career goal! Yayyyy Krissy!!!!!!

We went into half time 2-0 and feeling very confident but to quote our coach we needed to “keep our foot on the gas pedal.” The second half was a good showing and we ended up tacking on another goal from Apple. Demi and Krissy had a good combination through the midfield and Krissy played Apple in, who hit a great shot past the goalkeeper. The game ended 3-0 and we felt good about how we played and that we came away with 2 more wins this week.

Sunday’s game was Parents Day so a shout out to all the parents on this team. We have the BEST parents in the nation. They drive or fly to all of our games and support us win or lose. They are an amazing group and I know that I speak for my entire team when I say thanks for everything parents!!!!!!!!!!

Next week we are at Butler, so send us your good luck. :)

Revenge is a dish...

This weekend we traveled to Wright State for our only game of the weekend. Last year we lost to Wright State at their home field and for the returners we were ready for some revenge.

We started the game out slow and couldn’t really get any sustained possession. We had the ball in our defensive half a lot but couldn't get much going in the offensive half. Then Kiki capitalized on their defensive mistake and gave us 1-0 lead. This helped us to settle down and we had more sustained possession for the rest of the half. The second half we made some adjustments and wanted to come out and really pin them into their defensive half; that we did. The second half was amazing; we kept the ball and really got them chasing us. Then Apple just started being Apple and she scored 2 goals in the second half. Both were nice finishes in the box. We had a lot of other chances and did a great job of pinning them into the half but with about 2 mins left the defense had a little break down and they got in a late goal. The scored ended 3-1 and while we were upset that we didn’t get a shut out, we were very happy with another conference victory on the road.

A good weekend for your Panthers and we will be back in action on Wednesday at home vs Valpo @ 7 p.m. so come out and support!

Back home at Engelmann

This weekend we were back in action at Engelmann Stadium. We played Western Illinois on Friday and Detroit on Sunday. Our Friday game was under the lights and while Western Illinois wasn’t ranked, we knew we couldn’t look past them. We came out with a lot of energy but couldn’t get a goal in the first half. We out-shot them and really had them pinned in the half but couldn’t get a goal. So in the second half we were determined to get a couple goals. Apple got the scoring started when she was taken down in the box and calmly put away the PK. Then Laurel scored two great goals back-to-back. The first goal was a header off a pinpoint cross from Apple. Her next goal, she put away a great cross from Kelsey Holbert. The final goal of the half was Kenzie putting away a PK that Mary drew from a great run from the back into the box. The game ended 4-0 and we were very happy with the second half that we were able to put up so many goals. The defense played awesome and got another shut out.

Our game on Sunday was a wet one. It poured the entire game and stopped the minute the game was over. The parents and fans were awesome and sat through the whole thing.

Detroit had broken into the top 10 in the region so we knew that they were going to be good. They were a big, physical team and we knew we would have to match that. About 10 minutes into the game Kiki sent a great ball into the box and that I was able to easily head in for the early 1-0 lead. The half ended 1-0 but we needed more goals because Detroit was a good team. They tied the game up in the 60th minute but we didn’t panic. We just kept pushing knowing that we would have another opportunity to score. That we did, Kelly Lewers beat two defenders and sent a great low shot that their keeper made a save on but Apple was there to tap in the rebound. Overall we were happy with the game because we were able to match them physically and really scrapped to get this win. It showed that we can win games no matter what the weather or how the other team likes to play.

Another 2-0 weekend so we are sitting happy in Milwaukee! Next week we take on Wright State on Saturday so there should be a good Steinhauser crowd there!!!!!!

League Play Is Here

After a big week last week, we were all kind of thankful to only have one game this weekend. We traveled down to Cleveland State on Thursday for a Friday night game. This was our conference opener and we really wanted to send a statement to the rest of our conference.

The first couple minutes of the game were frantic because we wanted to high pressure and Cleveland state was just kicking the ball. But we finally got it settled down and I got the ball on the left side and crossed it and Apple headed the ball in the goal. We were up 1-0 and could finally settle down a bit. Then Emily Scott scored her first career goal off a corner kick. Then Kiki sent another great cross in the box and Laurel was able to get her head on it for us to go up 3-0 going into half time. We were feeling pretty good at halftime with our lead and really just focused on not giving up anything in the second half. That is exactly what we did. The defense played great and got the shut out and I even got another assist when I played to ball to Apple at the top of the box and which she was able to do a move around the defender and score. Overall we were very happy with the result (4-0) and the fact that everyone got to get in the game.

Next weekend we have both Friday and Sunday games at home so come out and support your Panthers!!!!!!

Rivalry Week!

This week was rivalry week as we were playing both Marquette and UW-Madison. The first game was against Marquette on Wednesday and nationally televised on Fox Soccer Channel. We knew this game was gonna be huge because they were ranked #12 and we were ranked #14 in the nation. Also with the campuses only being 3 miles apart and so many of us knowing the girls from Marquette, this game was going to be intense. We wanted to get as many people out to the game as possible, so we passed out flyers and took to using social media. We got the job done with a record crowd of 2,212. The atmosphere of the game was incredible. We had an awesome student section, so I need to make a special shout out to the ENGELMANN ELITE! The game though did not end up how we wanted it to; we lost 0-1 in heartbreaking fashion. Marquette scored in the 108th minute off a chip over our keeper. Overall, though, we didn’t play our best soccer, we gave the ball away too much and couldn’t really get a flow going. The game was fast paced and while we did lose, I don’t think we disappointed the UWM community. Thanks so much for all those who came out to the game and supported us, we really appreciated it!

I know that I have already given my parents a shout out in this blog but they truly deserved a shout out after leaving work early and driving 6 hours to the game. Then turning right around and driving 6 hours back home after the game to get home just in time for a little nap and then to go to work in the morning. Dave & Susette YOU ROCK!!!!

While the loss the Marquette put us in a little bit of a depression we knew we didn’t have much time to get ready for UW-Madison. Madison was coming in ranked #24 and just like Marquette we know them extremely well. I think the loss to Marquette helped us in the game against Madison because we were very determined to win. Also they had beaten us twice last year, so I know all the upperclassman on the team were eager to get another chance at them. We came out on fire and really frustrated Madison. We scored early off a corner kick by Kiki and while Hannah Kaul initially hit it and it looked like it crossed the goal line. The ball popped out to none other than Apple who smashed it home. Hannah, I give you credit in my book for the goal. :) We went into halftime feeling really good about how we were playing and with a 1-0 lead. But we knew Madison wouldn’t just roll over because we were playing well. We came out and were still dominating but Madison got a goal against the run of play and so it was 1-1 but we knew were playing well and getting chances so we would get a goal soon. Then with about 5 minutes left they had a obvious hand ball in the box which we thought would have given us a pk to win the game on but the ref didn’t call it and so we headed to overtime. [Editor’s Note: The referee had a reason for not calling the handball… unfortunately for him, no one in the stadium agreed… and it was the last minute of regulation] In overtime, again we came out and dominated and finally Mary sent a great ball to Apple at the top of the box who cracked a shot in the upper left corned of the goal for us to win on golden goal rule. We were soooooo happy to win that game because we believed that we truly deserved it and we worked out butts off to win that game. The defense was incredible all weekend. They all worked so hard and most importantly together.

While we ended the weekend 1-1 and we were handed our first loss of the season, we are still 7-1 and off the best start in school history. We learned a lot about ourselves this weekend and I believe got better. Thanks to the fans who continually come out and support us, especially during our rivalry week!

Go Panthers!!!!!!

Searching For Gold at the Minnesota Gold Classic

This weekend we took a road trip to play in the Minnesota Classic. Our first game was against Iowa State on Friday. They were a big, physical team but our skill eventually dominated. Apple scored in the first half off a free kick right outside the box. She blasted it right past the wall and goalie for us to take a 1-0 lead. We came out in the second half and really took it to Iowa State and then Mocha (Kelly) gave us the insurance goal off a great cross from Apple. Apple took the ball end line and crossed it and Mocha headed the ball home. We won 2-0 and were off to a great start on the weekend!

Saturday the team went to Mall of America and it was HUGE! Vienna and I walked around and we are pretty sure we counted about five footlockers. We wanted to go on a roller coaster but didn’t feel like paying $20 for one ride……college budget. Then we went to the Holbert’s house for Dinner! Thanks so much to all the parents for all the great food!!!!

Our final game of the weekend was against Minnesota and we knew this was gonna be a hard battle. It sure was, there was a great crowd and the game was extremely exciting. The first half we got pinned back in our half for a little while because Minnesota was high pressuring all over the field. Minnesota was very athletic and ran at us all game but we kept calm. Finally in the 76th minute off a free kick from kiki and which Apple headed into the top left corner.

2-0 at the Milwaukee Cup!

This weekend was the Milwaukee Cup, a tournament we host with our cross town rivals Marquette, and this year Long Beach State and St. Louis were invited.

We played Long Beach State on Friday night under the lights! It was an awesome game that was extremely high energy. Long Beach State was a very good team and was a great test for us but I can happily say that we came out on top 3-2. Long Beach State scored first and early but our team kept our composure and knew that soccer is a long game and that we had a long time to get back in it but it didn't take us too long. Apple got the scoring started after Kiki megged a Long Beach State player and left her in the dust, then she crossed a perfect ball to the back post which Apple headed home. The next goal was a penalty kick that was put away calmly by Apple (I told you her name would come up a lot). But Long Beach State was a good team and never gave up and got another goal. So the score was now 2-2 and both teams were pushing as hard they could. But no one can stop the little Canadian a.k.a. KIKI!!!!! Kiki scored the winning goal in the 80th minute and it was a great shot that she placed perfectly in the lower right corner, just out of reach from the goalie. The whole team played great and every sub that came on made an impact so an awesome win for UWM!

Our second game of the weekend was against St. Louis on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. We came out with a lot of energy but they sat back and were quite content to defend. So we got a little frustrated in the first half because we just couldn't quite seem to get a goal, even with all of the chances we generated. We went into half time 0-0 and were determined to come out and put them under even more pressure. Then Mocha (Kelly Lewers) got the scoring started off a pass from Speed demon Morgan LaPlant. We were all able to take a deep breath once we got that first goal. Then two Super Seniors Laurel and Kenz combined to give us an insueance goal. Laurel scored a great placed header off a Kenzie free kick. Finally Apple scored another header off another great serve from Kiki. The final score was 3-0 and everyone was feeling very happy with two wins on the weekend. Sadly, though, we came in second to Marquette on goal differential for the Milwaukee Cup. Congrats to Apple, Kiki, and Kelsey Holbert on all-tournament team!!!!

I have to give a shout out to my parents, who are the best in the world, and they drive to all my games from Michigan! Also another shout out to Coach David for getting our sweet new Adidas uniforms and gear for this weekend! Overall a great weekend with two wins, amazing weather, lots of fans, and everyone healthy!!!!!!!

Go Panthers!!!!!

Introducing your blogger for 2011, Helen Steinhauser

Hello Panther Fans!

I would like to introduce myself before you begin reading my blog about the 2011 Milwaukee women's soccer season. My name is Helen Steinhauser and I am a junior from Ann Arbor, MI. I grew up on a small farm outside of Ann Arbor and I am studying to get a degree in math. I play mostly on the left side but have played basically every position except goalie in my two years here at Milwaukee. I hope you enjoy my blog!

Our first game on the season was a kind of homecoming for me being that the game was played at Michigan state. I got to see some family and friends as well as old club teammates. Shout out to the Faylor's, Cindy Masini, Sarah Gadway, The Pheiffer's, Unlce Tom, Aunt Sue, and my cousin Sam and his friends. Thanks for the support! Now on to the game, we beat the Spartans by the same score as last year, 3-2. We came out very high intensity and scored 2 quick goals early in the first half. The first goal was created by Apple (Sarah Hagen) being a unstoppable, she took a shot that the goalie couldn't handle and left it on a platter for me to tap in the goal! The next goal was scored by Apple (get use to hearing her name), off a corner taken by myself. I just put the ball in a the air and let Apple go up and get it and she nailed it! Apple would score our third goal by getting a nice ball into her feet from Kiki (Keara Thompson) and making a composing finish in the box. We went into half time with a 3-0 lead and feeling very confident but we knew that Michigan State was a good team would try to come back. They scored 2 second half goals to make the game interesting but the second was was scored with only 45 seconds left. Over all a great start to the season! Shout out to the defense because they had their hands full the whole game!

Our second game of the weekend was going to be our home opener against Depaul and also it was our field dedication. We had an awesome crowd and now I can officially say that Laura Moynihan Field at Engelmann Stadium was rocking this past Sunday afternoon. Again we came out high intensity and scored a very early goal. Two freshmen, Kelsey Holbert and Kelly Lewers a.k.a. Mocha, hooked up to score in the first 40 seconds. Kels played a nice ball over the top and Mocha beat the keeper to put us up 1-0. That was all we needed because that ended up being the final score. Another shout of the defense for their first shutout of the season!

Overall a great starting weekend for your Panthers! Two good wins with one being on the road at a Big Ten school and no one got hurt! Next week we play in the Milwaukee Cup so home game Friday at 7 and Sunday at 1. Also the Friday game is a double header with the mens team so should be an awesome night for soccer! Come out and show your support!
